WEST END SCHOOL.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held on Thursday night. Present. Messrs. Jas. Garcia (chairman). Jas. Lobb, Jas. Hawke, J. B Hoskin, R. A. Large, H. J. Abram. T. R. Julian, C. O. Berg and R. M. Doull (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. J. W. Thomas) reported that the average attendance, which had been seriously affected by whooping c6ugh, was now improving, though about 20 children were still absent through that cause. The weekly averages for the month were 464.5, 470, 451, 501 and 510. Since October 1, thirty-three children had been admitted and twelve withdrawn. The roll number now was 541. Miss Thyer was absent through sickness. The trainees were very successful at the recent teachers’ examinations. Misses Olson. Jones Laurence and Valentine and Mr. Jillett obtained partial passes in D, each requiring only one subject to complete. Mr. Hawkes obtained a partial pass in three groups of D. and Mr. Jillett also passed three subjects for C. The grounds and buildings were inspected by Messrs. Abram and Berg, of the visiting committee. Arrangements had been made for the various classes under the supervision of the teachers to visit the baths, and a school swimming club has been formed. With Mr. Train the headmaster had waited on the trustees of the Western Park and obtained permission for the boys to play cricket on two afternoons per week from 3 to 5. The report, was adopted. It was resolved to heartily approve of the formation of the School Swimming Club. It was decided to vote £lO towards the establishment of a library for the junior classes at the school and to apply to the department for a subsidy. Tn view of the close proximity to Christmas and the approaching examinations, it was reported that the teachers did not consider it desirable to hold a gala day in Kawaroa Park. It was suggested that a function might be held in the school grounds early in the new year. It was accordingly decided not to proceed with the gala day this year.
