LAWN TENNIS

THE STRATFORD CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. (From Our Own Reporter.) Stratford, Sept. 7. ' The annual meetb ;» of the Stratford Lawn Tennis Club was held to-night. The president (Mr. H. E. Lawrence) presided over a good attendance. The report stated that the membership showed a alight decrease on last year’s figures, the total financial members being 46 ladies and 43 gentlemen. The club only held two dances, but they were very satisfactory from a social point of view. Since last year’s arrangement with the Domain Board, three asphalt Sind three grass courts had been completed and taken over, and wire-netting erected round the space for nine courts. Three additional asphalt courts had been formed later, and, although used by the club, had not yet been passed or taken over from the contractors. The Domain Board Had agreed to allow ten extra feet along the whole of the northern end, so that the extra run back would later on be available. A very useful pavilion had been erected at a total cost of £193. Representatives of the club met other clubs at home, at New Plymouth and at Inglewood. and were successful in winning the “B” grade competition for North Taranaki. The play-off for the Taranaki championship against the Manaia Club was also won by the Stratford Club’s team.. The committee recommended that interest in ladder competitions should be fostered during the coming season. Although the club could be run very cheaply owing to the taking up of debentures, the fact could not be overlooked that they had to repay £4OO in two years, and also to meet the bank overdraft, shortly to 'be incurred to pay for the new courts and pavilion. Prompt payment of subscriptions would naturally assist the incoming committee. The club were greatly indebted to Messrs. Bone end Forbes for valuable assistance in connection with the grass and asphalt courts, and also to the ladies for afternoon tea arrangements. The report concluded by urging upon members the necessity for taking an active interest in the activities of the club. The balance-sheet disclosed a credit balance of £177. Cash in bank was £4 9s sd. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. H. E. Lawrence; vice-preai-rents, Rev. C. W. Howard and Mr. V. A. Mackay; committee, Misses L. Nash. V. Sanderson, N. Milne, and Messrs. C. Clark and R. Grubb; treasurer, Mr. L. Ennis; secretary, Mr. G. C. Wilson; auditor, Mr. R. Sairey; club captain, Mr. F. Ranford; delegate to Taranaki Association, Mr. C. Clark.
