Mr. A. D. Stanley, secretary of the Auckland A. and P. Society, is at present on a visit to Stratford. Mr. Stanley is a former resident of Stratford. Owing to the indisposition of Sir Robert Stout, the Supreme Court in Masterton was adjourned yesterday morning till this morning. An Auckland message states that Senior-Detective James Cummings has been appointed chief detective at Auckland, vice Chief Detective C. D. MTlveney, who goes to Christchurch as inspectorA Palmerston North message states that Inspector MacKinnon, in charge of the local police force, received notice of his prw.uotion to the rank of superintendent. He has been transferred to CL.istchurch. The governors of the Herctaunga School for boys at Havelock North have appointed the Rev. J. G. T. Castles, M.A. as headmaster. Mr. Castles was for some years on the staff of the Wellington College and later on the staff of the Palmerston North High School. With the death of Mr. David Murray, who died at Cambridge on Thursday, there lias passed away one who figured largely in the history of Wanganui. Mr. Murray was born in Forfarshire, Scotland, So years ago, and came out to Wanganui as chief engineer of the steamer named after the town, and which was well known on the coast for some years. In IS6S he took over the business which, under the title of David Murray and Sons, has been, for over half a century, a household word in the engineering world. The late Mr. Murray was held in high esteem by all who knew him, and though most of his contemporaries have passed away, there arc still a great number who will regret to learn of his death. Deceased leaves four sons—Messrs. James, Thomas and Alexander Murray (Wanganui), and Peter Murray (Cambridge) and three daughters—Mesdames A. E. Sykes (New Plymouth), W. Sands (Cambridge), and Noble (Masterton).
