Splendid weather favored the Marton Jockey Club for their spring meeting. The attendance Was large, but speculation was only moderate. Favorites had a bad run, dividends being good throughout the day. The weather promises to be fine for Thursday’s hunt meeting, when Carawock. Lark Hail, Mountain Crag, Adrienne, Demos, Civility, Prince Rufus, Many Colors and Good Mark should run well. Brigadier Bill. Kuhio, Herekawa, Panim, Importer and Sir Pam were withdrawn from the Trial Plate, twenty horses going to the post. Attractive was solidly supported. Mountain Csag and Bonny Marion being the only others seriously considered After some delay the field went off in Mr. O’Connor’* best style, Equalise and Foolish taking the lead, witu Attractive handy. The field strung out as they ran to the turn, where Attractive came fast, passing Equalise at the distance, and coming •n comfortably to hold off Bonny Marion, who came with a late run, by a length and a belf, ’ Equalise was half a length away third, followed by Soliform and Mountain Crag. The last-named drew a bad position at the post and did not begin too well. Trlboulet, Festive, Scotch Nell and Kiko Kiko’were withdrawn from the hurdles, fourteen _>.ng to the post. Carawock was a warm Javorkc, with fair support for Hindi. Dempsey tnd Gold Star. Complimentary broke a good line, but was quickly passed by Eonmark and King Rufus, who led into the straight. Passing the stand Eonmark was just clear of Prince Rufus, Hindi and Complimentary, the latter suffering by a bump which took place ft* the field ran out of the straight. Prince

Rufus led along the back from Dempsey and Eonmark, with Carawock well back. Prince Rufus led into the straight, but was quickly challenged by Dempsey and Eonmark, the latter fencing badly and running out wide. Dempsey and Prince Rufus had a great battle to the post, the Aucklander just gaining the verdict by a neck. Eonmark was two lengths away third, followed by Captain Sarto, Carawock (eased up) and Tarquin (who made up a lot of ground in the last six furlongs). Carawock should go better in the hunters* class on Thursday. Savoury was never prominent. Scratchings accounted for Elvaette and Elothenes in the Spring Handicap, . Many Colors looked like starting favorite, but a late run on Doleful Ditty saw him finish up a good favorite, with Many Colors, Martulla and Equitable next in favour. All moved off in line. Doleful Ditty and Many Colors leading a bunched lot past the stand. Many Colors assumed command at the seven furlongs post and was joined by Stream at sis furlongs, Doleful Ditty and Martulla following. The field closed up nearing the turn, where ManyColors, Martulla, Doleful Ditty and Equitable all flattered their supporters. Many Colors was in front at the half distance, but failed to stall off Equitable, who Gashed through on the rails and won by a bare length. Doleful Ditty was a similar distance away third and Valencia was fourth.

Bright Day and Equitable declined their engagements In the Marton Handicap. A good betting race saw L’Amour, Zircon, Listowcl, Cold Steel and Demos well backed. From a good start Demos and Llstowel led a bunched crowd past the stand. At six furlongs Listowel drew clear, with Kilgour, Demos, Admiral Codrington and L’Amour handy. Listowel and Kilgour were still in front entering the straight, with Admiral Codrington, L’Amour, Kahikatea and Arch Salute all putting in claims. Admiral Codrington looked a winner at the distance, but Arch Salute finished with a great rattle and won an exciting race by three-quarters of a length, Kahikatea finishing fast a length further back, followed closely by L’Amour, Tenterfield and Kilgour. Mark Time was poorly supported and faded out at the business end. L’Amour had every chance, hut failed to finish on. Admiral Codrington was one of the extreme outsiders, and he and the winner returned big dividends. Zircon was never prominent, nor was Cold Steel. Kahikatea received a bad passage and did well to get third. Adrienne, Halcyon and Royal Tar did not come out for the Hack Steeples, Adrienne be-« Ing slightly sore, but will probably start on the second day. Halcyon was withdrawn in favor of Te Toa. Ten lined up, but only four finished. Birkwick, Te Toa and Lark Hall were strongiy supported, but a chapter of accidents spoiled the race. All moved off together, and passing the stand Te Opal and Lark Hall were together, followed by Te Toa and Ringi. Lark Hall led along the back, where Sanslimo fell. Lark Hall’ was well clear of Te Toa running into the straight the second .time, and passing the stand Lark Hall, Birkwick and Te Toa were going best. Glenform fell at the next fence, and Whizz Bang and Blue Hail came to grief along the back. Lark Hall was going nicely in front, but Birkwick joined him , three furlongs from home. Birkwick looked like winning, but broke a leg on the flat, leaving Lark Hall to win by nearly 100 yards from Te Opai, who was three lengths In front of Ringi. Te Toa was the only other to finish. Absentees from the Electric Handicap were Mangawhero, Sunny Vale, Pebble IL, Panim. Nemallne and Panorama, a good field of fourteen sporting silk. Civility and Dodo were entrusted with the bulk ' of the money. Another perfect start saw Bugle Note moment arily In front, but at the .end of a furlong Dodo went to the front, and Cochineal and Civility ran into good positions. Cochineal was slightly in front of Dodo at the turn, and came on strongly to win by tivo lengths. Some Red finished fast third three lengths away, just in front of Civility. The winner returned a remarkable dividend, which was shared by several Taranaki sports. A remarkable feature of the race was that the three placed horses were all sired by All Red. Automoana was the only scratching in the Railwav Handicap, sixteen going into the starter’s hands. Thespian, looking a picture, was a hot order, with King Quin, Bright Day. Aeriform and Tatau Tatau in good demand. King Quin and Thespian were the early leaders. King Quin, Hipo. Tatau Tatau, Island and Lady Kotiripo were all in at the turn, but Hipo and Tatau Tatau singled themselves out In the run home. Tatau Tatau outstaying the New Plymouth gelding and winning a great race by less than a length. Lady Kotiripo being a neck away third, followed by Island. Thespian went well for four furlongs, but could not get up, and was not persevered with. Kyoto dropped out of the Tutaenul Welter, twenty starting. Pebble 11. ana Many Colors

carried the bulk •of the money. Good Mark dashed off in front from a fine start, but Mangawhero put a big break qn the field along the back. Elvaette, Good Mark and Pebble 11. joined in at the turn, Elvaette winning comfortably by half a length from Good Mark, with Pebble 11. and Mangawhero close up. WANGANUI RACES FIRST DAVY’S WEIGHTS.
