DAIRY PRODUCE.

THE LONDON MARKET. * AFFECTED BY STRIKE. The English dockers’ strike has caused the prices of New Zealand butter, cheese, and frozen meat to advance. There are five vessels with New Zealand produce held up in the docks by the strike, hence the advance in values of the stocks in warehouse. When the strike is .over the market will ‘be overstocked with butter and cheese and ■values will again recede. The imports of both butter and. cheese into the United Kingdom are increasing. In April there was an increase of 81,050 tons, as compared with April, 1922, in the imports of butter, cheese, margarine, bacon and hams. The principal increase in butter was from Denmark, which country is practically sending the whole of its output to the United Kingdom. The imports of butter for the first four months of the year, compared with the figures for the corresponding period of lUst year, are as under: 1922. 11023

1,680,656 1,828,948 The European contribution increased by 188369 cwt.; the United States sent 9690 cwt. more; Argentine supplies increased, by 2G,400cWt.; and the increase from New Zealand was 71,503 cwt. It is only from Australia that there have been decreased supplies, and the decrease in the four months amounts to 155,976 cwt. About eight weeks ago Danish butter was retailing at Is 6d. per lb. and New Zealand at Is 4d. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., in their produce circular, dated London, May 24, state: — (f We believe that the public have, to a large extent, switched over from butter to best margarine at lOd. to Is. per lb. The quality of the latter is sufficiently good for them not to break away from this change unless particularly tempted, and the opinion of many shopkeepers is that butter at Is 4d its not a sufficient inducement.”
