TROTTING CONFERENCE. Br Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, July 10. t annual conference of representatives of New Zealand trotting clubs opened this morning. In the absence of the president, Mr. H. T. Nlcoll, the vice-presidem, Mr. John Rowe, presided. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. A number of letters were read from clubs, expressing satisfaction with the conduct of the stipendiary stewards. A special report was also read, declaring that the present system was an undoubted success. A motion by the New Brighton delegate that no member of the association shall be eligible to be elected a representative to act at the conference or to act as a substitute for a representative, deleting in the case of rule 13 the exception in the case of the president of the association, was lost. An amendment to rule 95 was moved by the acting-president and adopted: that the club, by its committee, then the stewards, shall for each racing year or, at its discretion, for each race meeting, appoint a judical committee. Wellington, Last Night. At the trotting conference the date of the Waimate Plains meeting at Hawera next season was fixed as April 26.

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) The Wellington R.C. winter meeting will be advanced another stage to-day, and the prospects are brighter than on Saturday, both as regards weather and condition of the racing tracks. Splendid acceptances are carded, and with' first day's form io follow, punters should be more successful than they were on the opening day. Proceedings will open with the Corunna Hurdles, run over a mile and a half, for which fifteen hare accepted. Fifst Born, who scored decisively with 10.8. in the Vittoria Hurdles, heads the list with 11.9, and seeing that he led the field over the last five furlongs on Pftturday, the rise is not excessive. Eerie, wh-> acted as runner up, has been raised 61bs, and rhe most likely one amongst the others appears to be Blue Socks, who would have been placed <»n Saturday but for making a faulty jump. Ten have been paid up for in the Maiden Handicap, six futlonga, for horses that have not won a race of more than 100 sovs. This permits Hinohari, who has scored a win, three seconds, and a third. In ‘the last five starts, to figure in the field. Mountain Signal, with a second and a third in her last three staris, also remains in. The Jutland Handicap,, six furlongs, with sixteen on the card, should provide an excellent contest. Joy Ride has gone up from 10.12 to 11.8, but is so well at present that the extra lOlbs may not make much difference. Paphian, who followed Joy Ride home on Saturday, has been raised 51bs, and Avispado (who was reported to have had bad luck in the race, and finished right up, third) has 31ba extra to carry. The nine in the Hack and Hunters’ Steeples, two miles five furlongs, are a moderate crowd. Sanforte, a first day’s winner, has gone up from 9.2 to 10.3, and Te Maire now meets him on 10 lbs better terms. The most dangerous •of the new brigade appears to be Uncle Bob, who won the Hunters’ Hurdles very easily at Marton last week, and might possibly have added the Rangitikei Hunt Cup Steeples to his credit but for falling when going strongly in the last of three circuits. Uncle Bob strikes one as being a very promising horse. A fine field of fourteen should line up for the Parliamentary Handicap, one and a quarter miles. Including Tame Fox (who won with 10.11 last year), and Arch Salute (who scored the previous year). From all accounts Tame Fox finished like a shot from a gun at the end of a mile on Saturday, and a rise of 5 lbs may not inconvenience the Fordell horse. Comical has been raised 11 lbs, and that and the distance may be against him. Surveyor ran a fine race in the Welcome Cup, finishing almost In line with the second and third horses, and he gets off with 2 lbs less in the saddle to-day. Urgency, who finished third, being asked to carry 11b extra. On paper. Tame Fox and Surveyor appear to have the best of the handicap as far as the top-weights are concerned. Amongst the nine stone division Tenterrteld and the much boomed Guncase are a pair expected to run the distance out. If Tame Fox pulls through with his steadier of 11.5 to-day he will prove himself a great horse —under winter conditions, anyway. The Fleet Handicap, seven furlongs, has attracted thirteen. Alaric, who won with 9.2 on Saturday, has 10.1, and Doleful Ditty, who finished fast in third place, has to carry 11b extra. Seven furlongs should suit Doleful Ditty better than six. If form Is any guide. Dangerous others are Kaotane and Santiago, and the race looks open. The High-Weight Handicap, one and a quarter miles, will draw a good field, and the gallop may sharpen up a number of Winter Hurdles’ car didates for Saturday. Matatua, Mllltaire and several others are possessed of pace. To-day’s racing concludes with the Petone Handicap, five furlongs, in which Ecuador, Atapo, Dodo, and other smart sprinters will be slipped.
