STORY OF THE HEAVENS.
LECTURE TO THE W.E.A. “Astronomy” was the subject of a lecture delivered last night bj r the Rev. Oscar Blundell, honorary director of the New Plymouth observatory, under the auspices of the Worker’s Educational Association. The lecturer prefaced his address by remarking that it was strange that so few people studied astronomy closely, seeing that the heavens afforded such splendid opportunities for observation. With the aid of a fine series of lantern slides, Mr. Blundell explained the solar system, describing the characteristic features of the planets, their moons and suns, as well as dealing in an interesting manner with other stellar bodies and nebulae clusters. Some very fine views of the moon, taken at differen phases, served to show that this satellite of the earth, with its vast volcanic forma tions, indicative of gigantic convulsions long years ago, forms an interesting sub ject for observation and study. Views of the starry spaces, far removed from our sun and its system, were thrown on the screen. During his lecture, Mr. Blundell intimated that the New Plymouth Astronomical Society was procuring a fine series of slides, taken from the big 100-inch telescope on Mt. Wilson, California, and arrangements were being made to deliver a lecture ngjct month, when these slides would be shown for the first time in New Zealand. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Blundell for his interesting address.
