GOLF.
THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. KIRKWOOD DOING WELL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received June 15, 8,10 p.m. London, June 14. The first two rounds of the open golf championship at Troon were played in fine weather. Whitcombe, a young Bath professional, did the first round in 70 (a record for the course) and the second in 76. Havers did two 73’s, Hagen 147, Lockhart 149, Scott 150, Kirkwood, Walton and Fernie 151. The following definition of golf is attributed to the “Golf in Australia’: — “Golf is a science, a study of a lifetime, in which you may exhaust yourself, but never your subject. It is a contest, a duel, calling for courage, skill, strategy, and self-control. It is a test of temper, a trial of honour, a revealer of character, and it affords the chance to play the man, and also the gentleman. It means getting closer to nature, fresh air, exercise, and sweeps away all mental cobwebs, general recreation of the tired tissues. It is a cure for care, an antidote to worry. It includes companionship with friends, social intercourse, opportunity for courtesy, kindliness, and generosity to an opponent. It promotes not only physical health, but moral force.”
