JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.

TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL MEETING. The Taranaki Justices of the Peace Association held their annual meeting last night, when Mr. F. E. Wilson (Mayor) presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report stated that the year had been somewhat disappointing, as the association was not yet fully launched. The present membership was 61. Thanks were due to the Justice Department for allowing the use of the jurors’ rooms for meetings. The year had closed with a credit of £2O 12s Bd, and as this sum was considered ample to meet all ordinary requirements it was recommended that the annual subscription now due (10s) remain in abeyance for the current year. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, Mr. Wilson said that, wisely he thought, the question of amalgamation with the Wellington association had been left in*abeyance. A Dominion conference was to be held this year and the movement would probably go forward in a much stronger manner. Mr. Wilson mentioned that the New Plymouth Law Society was arranging lectures for law students and others interested, and as a member of the council of the society he would be pleased to endeavor to arrange for addresses to the justices if such were desired. The motion was seconded by Mr. A. M. Mowleni, S.M., and carried. Mr. Mowlem was re-elected president 1 of the association for the ensuing year Messrs. F. E. Wilson “and N. K, Mac Diarmid being’ appointed vice-presidents. Mr. W. J. Chaney was prevailed upon to accept the appointment of secretary and treasurer for a further term, high tributes to his work on behalf of the association being paid bMr. Mowlem and others. Messrs. H. R Cattley, J. R. Hill, T. Furlong, R. W. D. Robertson and P. J. H. White were elected the committee. The incoming committee were recommended to arrange for short quartery addresses during the year. The recommendation in the report with regard to subscriptions was agreed. A hearty vote* of thanks was accorded to Mr. Chaney for his services during the past year.
