CENTRAL SCHOOL.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The Central School Committee met on Monday. Present: Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. (chairman), Mesdames Down and Jemison, Messrs. T. M. Avery, H. E. Fookes, and F. Coleman (secretary). The headmaster (Mr. D. P. Evans) reported:— Changes of Staff.—Mr. Adlam, fourth assistant, has left on promotion as headmaster to Norfolk; Mr. H. W. Lock has been appointed temporarily to fill the vacancy. I wish to record my highest appreciation of the efficient manner in which Mr. Adlam carried out his duties whilst a member of our staff. ; Miss Morrison has been appointed addii tional relieving assistant at the infant 'school. Miss E. Pearce has received notice that she is to be appointed to an ■ “exchange” position in Canada. As far as we know, she will be leaving this school early in August. Re tooth-brush drill: The'staff consider the practice of 'expectorating in the playground most 1 objectionable. Cannot a drain with permanent flow of water be installed? Dr. ! Gunn’s official visit: Dr. Gunn has pracI ticallv completed her medical inspection, : with the exception of standards 2 and 6. : She expressed herself as delighted with ; the general cleanliness and tidiness of the pupils, and also with the care and i attention devoted to the teeth. Septic : mouths and throats are now reduced to i a minimum. Playing area (Poverty I Flat): We almost despair of being able j to keep a green sward on this area. The j ground appears to become water-logged, I which leads to the exclusion of air. To liny mind the only remedy is tile-drain-! 'ing and top-dressing with soil. Piano: If funds permit it is imperative that | the piano receive a thorough overhauling and tuning. The piano cover applied I for has not yet materialised. At a later I period in the year it is our intention to stage the well-known and popular operetta “Princess Chrysanthemum,” hence the necessity for tuning piano to “pitch.” Stratford memorial library: To date I have in hand £l9 4s 7d for the memorial library, with a few small subscriptions to come in. The committee extended its congratulations to Mr. Adlam on his promotion to headmaster of Norfolk School, and placed on record its appreciation of the excellent services rendered to the school.

The question of draining the playing area at the Central School was referred to Messrs. Avery, Fookes, and Coleman to report, and other matters in the headmaster’s report were left in the hands of the secretary.

The report of the visiting committee (Mrs. Down and Messrs. Coleman and Cobham) was received, and it was resolved that the ladders at the infant school be placed in position for the pupils’ use. The committee decided not to grant a I holiday for the Hawera Show. It was resolved that in future the monthly meetings will be held on the £rgt Monday of .the month*
