HELICOPTER FLIGHT.
INDUCEMENT TO EXPERIMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, May 11. The Air Ministry has issued conditions in connection with the £50,000 prize for a helicopter competition. The machine must rise straight into the air and fly horizontally in any direction, and descend vertically into a restricted space. The requirements are that the machine must rise 2000 feet, descend and alight in a five miles wind, also 500 feet in a 20 miles wind. It must also make a vertical ascent of 2000 feet and remain hovering for half an hour. It must also fly a circuit of 20 miles at a speed of 60 miles per hour. Lastly, it must manoeuvre over a given point, then, shutting off the enI gine, descend from 5000 feet into an area of 100 feet.
The prize will be divided as follows: £5OO for a straight up ascent and descent; £1.5.000 for hovering; £20,000 for the circular flight; £lO,OOO for the descent without engine.
In addition to the pilot, the helicopter must carry petrol for an hour’s flight and a load of 1501 b. Several machines have already been designed, one having great revolving vanes, driven by an engine of 1000 horse-power.
