GORED IN BULL FIGHT.
MATADOR’S CRITICAL POSITION. By Telecraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Paris, May 8. The celebrated Spanish matador Mendez was gored and dreadfulty injured in the first bull fight of the season at Bordeaux. He fought three bulls. He placed a pair of banderillos in the first when it charged him and knocked him back to the ground. He was not seriously hurt and proceeded to dispatch the bull and then a second. There was great enthusiasm, the crowd admiring his almost reckless daring. He faced the third, of which he had previously expressed fear. The bull charged forthwith and tossed Mendez, who just managed to clamber to safety and fainted. He was gashed in the abdomen and partially disembowelled. He suffered, from internal haemorrhage from a severed artery, An operation was immediately performed in hospital, Mendez refusing an anaesthetic. His condition is critical.
