INGLEWOOD COUNTY.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. THE OVERSEER’S REPORT. The Inglewood County Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. R. Stewart, J. Hunter, G. Capper, J. Grieves, A. E. Laurence, and H. R. Jones. Cr. R. Stewart was appointed acting-chairman. The overseer reported that the permanent surfacemen had been employed patching, blinding, water-tabling and backing up metal on the following roads: Suffolk, Junction, Egmont i North and South, Mountain, Upland North and South, Bedford, Dudley, Durham, Bristol, Norfolk East and West, Kalmata, Everett, Tarlki, Richmond, Lincoln and Davis. Re-formation work had been done on Tariki East and the Wor-tley. A good deal of repairs had been done to the Hursthouse Road. Wings -had been erected to the Kaimlro bridge, which ftas now complete, and the road open for traffic. The Bedford Road bridge north of Sur rey was now finished, and Mr. Laurence had made a very good job. The estimated cost of bridge and approaches was £9B 13s and th? actual cost £97 3s 7d. The Bedford Roail, north of Dudley, contract, was practically com pleted. A small bridge on the Upland Road was in a very dangerous condition and would have to be re-built in the near future. Notices had been placed on this bridge ns well as on the two bridges on Rugb.v Road. The erection of the Bedford Road bridge should be put in hand as soon as possible, as it would be unsafe for- milk carting next season. Contracts had been signed up for the supply and delivery' of 2000 cubic yards boulders, ‘Maketawa; 1500 cubic yards, boulders, comer Bristol and Junction Roads; 100 cubic yards handnapped metal. Tariki Road pit; 50 cubic yard* hand-napped metal, Waitui. The grader was working at present on the Mountain Roan North, from the borough boundary to Walongona. When this piece was finished the main tenance metal at Durham Road would be crushed. He proposed running the grader along some of the roads and giving the watertables a clean out before winter, when convenient. The report was adopted. CONSULTING ENGINEER’S REPORT. The consulting engineer reported that seven chains of metalling was required to complete the Ratapiko metal, and this would be fin ished as soon as the state of the road and the weather permitted. A mile of the King Road .was laid off and plans and specifications were in course of preparation. The Richmond Road work was nearing completion, and only awaited fine weather to see it out of hand. The Norfolk Road West contract had been completed, and application made for the Government subsidy. The Otaraoa Road contract had been let. and arrangements made for an early start. The formation and metalling of G miles 56 chains of the Auta’wa and Pita roads had been satisfactorily completed, and an application had already. been made for the Government subsidy. e The report was adopted. The engineer was authorised to prepare nlans for the erection of the Maketawa and Ngatoro bridges, the former to be built on the old road line, making the road straight, and the latter to he erected’helow the present site, thus reducing the grade and the angle. Th<? engineer was instructed to prepare plans and specifications for the remainder of the work on the Otaraoa Rond, and tenders will be called as soon as possible. SETTLERS’ REQUIREMENTS. Mr. A. Chard waited on the round! Ad asked that a bridge on the Upland Road, which was in a state of collapse, should be replaced either by a pipe culvert or a small concrete arch and filling. Ho suggested that the work should be done out of rate money, and offered to provide a horse and dray to assist with the filling—The overseer agreed that something would have to ho clone, and It was resolved to refer the matter to the new overseer. (Messrs. A. W. Budge and McDonald, settlers on the Maknra Road, asked the council to do seme necessarj’ grading and culvorting on the rnad to give them access to their sections.— Overseer to report. LOAN MATTERS. The. State Advances Department, notified payment io the council’s £loo Richmond Rond loan. £lOO Motukawa Road loan, and £9O Ratapiko Road No. 2 loan. The Public Works Office. Stratford, forwarded authority for the expenditure of the grant of £3OO (£ for £ basis) for the work of re-formation, culverting and metalling of about 97y» -chains of the Hursthou.so Road. The Public Works Office notified payment to the council’s account of £166 13s 4d on account of work done on the Mangaoraka bridge (£1 for £2).. The State Advances Department notified approval of the council’s application for a loan of £250.f0r the purpose of metalling the Aufawa ana Pita roads. The special order in connection with tlrj loan of £5OOO for the repayment of the ante cedent liability was passed. It was resolved to take the necessary steps to raise the loan for the erection of the bridges over the Ngatoro and Maketawa rivers an the Junction Road. GENERAL. It was resolved to extend the tender tf Paul and Foreman on the Lincoln Read to include 300 yards of crushed metal at 10s per yard. The tender of A. J. Kibby for dog collars at 6 5-8 d was accepted. G. Barrack was appointed dog tax collector. A special meeting will be held on Tuesday. May 8, to consider the balance-sheet. Cr. Hunter referred to the nooc| for attention to the Everett. Road. It was resolved io pbtain 500 yards of boulders for the use of that road and other roads in the vicinity.

Cr. Laurence drew attention to the need for repairs tn the Ngatoro bridge, on the Mountain Rond. It. was resolved to forward a set of 9-inch rijies to the Pukemahoe Road, and also tn the Junction Road. Cr. Grieve was' authorised tn procure, up to 25 yards of maintenance metal For the Autawa Road. It was decided to bring into operation the by-laws regulating the h,eav>’ traffic on the roads during the winter month?. Mr. Thos.’ Harland, of Ohura, was appointed overseer. Prior to the conclusion of the meeting, thnct ing-chairman, on behalf of the council, thanked the clerk for the faithful manner in wMch his work had alwavs heen carried ou\ He also thanked the staff. The clerk, in re turning thanks, submitted a detailed statement of figures showing the transactions on the general *nd loan accounts for the period ending March 31, with comparative figures fothe previous two years since the inception of the county.
