SHEEP-DOG TRIALS.

MEETING AT TARATA. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The sixteenth annual meeting of the Tarata Sheep Dog Trial Club was held at Tarata on Thursday and yesterday. The gathering proved very successful, though the boisterous weather on the first day somewhat delayed the start. The club was favored with fine weather yesterday, and the officials carried out the events without delay, completing the programme. The trials were held on Mr. R. Paterson’s property, In a sheltered valley, the grounds being placed at the club’s disposal by the owner, whilst the sheep were provided by Mr. S. There was a good attendance of the public, who were treated to some good work in the pulling and yarding, the performance of the local dogs being particularly good. ,In the huntaway, however, the work was disappointzing. Competitors were present from all parts of Taranaki, including E. Johnson, of Kiore, "Hemp” dogs winning three firsts and two seconds, as well as several minor places. Mr. F. J. Goldfinch, of Ohura, was- judge, and his decisions gave general satisfaction. Mr. H. Waite acted as time-keeper. The various officials, including Messrs. S. George (flag steward), IL Lambert (ground steward), G. Burr and J. Drummond (dog stewards), D. Lambert (mounted steward), J. Mackie, G. Burr, A. George and J. Drummond (sheep stewards), all did their work well. A feature was the catering, which was in the hands of a strong ladles’ committee under the supervision of Mesdames H. Lambert and S. George. Mr. H. Lambert, the president, was particularly attentive to visitors, and he was ably assisted by a strong committee, of which the secretary (Mr. D. Winfield) deserves a special word of praise.
