HAWKE’S BAY MEETING. RAIN CAUSES POSTPONEMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, April 27. On account of the inclement weather the committee of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club has postponed the races till to-morrow and Monday. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Pluto is coming on nicely now. Amberley races take place at Riccarton toThe crack two-year-old Queen March has just about had enough racing this season. Wanganui’s fearsome hencoop beat old Khartoum on Tuesday morning, and the horse may not race again. Black Art strikes one as a rattling' good hurdler, and a horse likely to win a good race this winter. Birthmark runs in the nomination of Mrs. H. Richards (Palmerston North), who was well-known in trotting circles in Taranaki. The veteran Moulu is looking and going wel) at present, and on recent form should pick up a small steeplechase this winter. The Rangitlkei Hunt Club is giving away nearly £lOOO in stakes at its July meeting. They will be lucky if they pay ex’s. For the time of the year Gladful is more forward than ever before, and, judging by his Trentham running, the old fellow will again win his winter oats. Ted Penman has Detroit and Sonnino in strong work at Otaki, the last-named jumping the big fences proficiently. Detroit looked well at Feilding, and is far from being a spent light. There is no more popular horseman than Jack O’Shea, and sportsmen were pleased when he was reinstated. O’Shea has kept himself fit during his “holiday,” and will not want for rides. Horsemen of his calibre are few and far between. Evidently there are some game sports in New Zealand! The position of handicapper to the Dunedin Jockey Club, recently vacated by Mr. J. E. Henrys, has attracted twenty applicants. All Gold, by Kilboy—Noctorum, acted as runner-up in the Autumn Plate at Awapuni, and is a two-year-old that should win good money for Mr. W. R. Kemball. The Palmerston scribe “Flaneur” states that Dainty Step has made a good recovery from the injuries she received while racing at Awapuni, and was sent back to her owner, Mr. W. Fenwick, of Feilding. on Thursday. A Wanganui writer states that Mr. G. M. Currie intends sending Thespian across to Sydney for the spring meetings, and Deluge will probably accompany the crack. If Beauford. Gloaming, Rapine, Thespian, David and King of the* Forest measure strides the race should be worth watching. Nowadays our racecourses bristle with stipes, detectives, tote inspectors, etc. What is the matter with adding an inspector of weights, measures and weighing machines? The weights and weighing machines are often at fault, while the measures of whisky and. other joyproducing fluids are always short . Maurice McCarten now leads the jockeys’ premiership, an exceptional run since Christmas raising his total to 42 wins, v Emerson, who had a good start in the spring, is second with 36 successes, while the Re u brothers. Ashley and Roy. are well up with 33 apiece. E. A. Reesing 27, Con. Reed 26\ and A. J. McFlvnn 25% are next. “Dug.” Webster heads the waineri

with 25 wins, mostly in small events on the West Coast. R. W. King 20, F. D. Jones 19%, J. H. Jefferd 18, T. H. Gillett 17, F. E. Looinb 17, and Fred Tilley 16 have also had a good season. Amongst the apprentices H. E. Ryder la facile princeps with 33, his nearest attendants being R. E. Thompson 20, E. S. Garrett 19. H. Wiggins 17, R. W. McTavish 16, S. Anderson 15, and M. Conway 14. All of _these lads are capable riders, and form the nucleus of a promising brigade of jockeys of the future. The disappointing Eonmark broke down badly on the West Coast, and probably saved his party’ from further losses. In two seasons the King Mark gelding has only won two or three races, and was too bad in the wind to ever do much good. Joy Ride, who raced prominently at Trentham, was bred by Mr. H. Hassall at Hastings, and Is by the defunct Merry Moment from Sanguine. He was sold for 250 guineas as a yearling, and as his winnings total nearly a thousand, he has not been a bad investment. Joy Ride has speed and stamina, and is a horse worth watching. Down at Riccarton they still talk of Gloaming as a possibility for ’Stralia in the spring. The champion appears to be sound, but is restricted to the lightest of tasks, and will not be tested until R. Mason returns from Hawke’s Bay. The imported horse. The Ace, after a liglV season at'Stonyhurst stud, has been sent down to Riccarton to sec if he will stand a pre paratlon. Other additions to Cntts Bros.’ team are yearling colts by Bezonian—Heatherbrac and Autumnus—Flitaway respectively. The Demosthenes horse Gasbag, who pulled up lame at. Ellerslie on Easter Monday, has arrived in Waverley to take up stud duties. No doubt the services of this fine stayer will be in big demand with Taranaki breeders next season. Stallion fees in U.S.A, were never Higher than nt present, and a successful sire is worth a paddockful of racers. £5OO is asked (and rushed!) for the services of Man-o’-war or Friar Rock; £4OO for Fair Play or Negofol ; £3OO for Hourloss, and so on. Over thirty sires are standing at £lOO or over, and American studmasters (more shrewd than New Zealanders) demand “cash in advance.” If one had the unpaid fees in this Dominion, or even in this province alone, it would “do” Nominations for the Great Northern meeting, at which £16,000 stakes will be distributed, closed last evening, and from what one hears Taranaki stables will be well represented. Oh. for a good ’chaser this winter! There’s money in it for the lucky ones.
