OBITUARY.
MAORI WAR.VETERANS. The death ie reported recently of Major-General Wm. ‘Smith, R.A., at Charlton Kings. Gloucester, England. He served in the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, battle of Cawnpore on December 6, actions of Serai Ghat (men-
tioned in dispatches), Chanda, Umeerpore and Sultanpore, seige and capture of Lucknow, attack on Moosabagh, and action of Barree, and present with various forces in pursuit of the enemy, etc. New Zealand War, 1864, in command of a detachment of Royal Artillery in the campaigns on the Waikato and at Te Ranga, and attack on Gate Pa, where his guns were reported by Sir Duncan Cameron as having been of great service (medal).
The death occurred on March 11, 1923, after a long illness, at St. Edmund’s. Mr. John Kelly, aged 78 years. He was a native of Dublin, and enlisted at the age of 18 in the 50th Queen’s Own (now the Royal West Kents). He served throughout the Maori War with his famous regiment, from 1863 to 1866. Later he was in Australia with the colors for two years, and also did the usual round of military stations in Ire land. After many years of military service, Mr. Kelly left the army in 1883. was at that time serving as a drillinstructor on the permanent staff at Maidstone. Tn 1908 Mr. and Mrs. Kelly (who survives him) acted as caretakers of St. Edmund’s House, where they were recipients of presents and congratulations on the celebration of their golden wedding on August 6. 1921. The interment took place in the London Road Cemetery, the Rev. H. W. Wheeler (curate of St. Edmund’s) officiating.
