WEST END SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE.’ At the last meeting of the West End School Committee the secretary submitted a balance-sheet on the recent school picnic at Ngaere. This was considered very satisfactory. It was resolved to accord a vote of thanks to Mr. Priest for the donation of sweets. The Education Board intimated that the following holidays had been fixed for the year: —Easter, March 30 to April 3; Autumn, May 5 to 14: Spring. August 25 to September 11; Christmas, December 21 to February 5, both days inclusive in each case. The acting-headmaster reported that at the end of 1922 the school closed with a roll of 639 and opened in 192'3 ‘with a roll of 610, the roll at the end of the month being 614. The average jor last month was 550.5, as against the average of 582.4 for last quarter. 'Ar the end of 1922 they lost from the staff Mr. D. P. Evans (headmaster), Miss A. K. Anthony (6th assistant), MiAs Sharp (9th assistant), and Misses Thomas and Hodge and Mr. Hancock (pupil teacher). Additions to the staff were: Mr. Gilbert (relieving Ist as distant), Miss Thyer (9th assistant) and Mr. Hure (relieving 7th assistant). At the end of February, Miss I. M. Anthony (sth .assistant), and Mr. Hure left, their places being filled by Miss Hargreaves (relieving) and Miss Hobbs. Owing to the size of Standard I. that class °was divided into two parts and placed in the gymnasium with a curtain between, but thpre was need for something better to divide the two classes. On February 23. 01 pupils swam for certificates, the awards being 4 merit. 35 proficiency rtnd 20 learners’ certificates. The new libraries have been opened and proved very popular with the pupils. Meetings of the pupils have been held and it was hoped to start basket ball and hockey next week.

It was resolved to place on record the committee’s appreciation of the splendid services rendered by Miss I. M Anthony during the ejght years thai she has been an assistant at the school, and. while regretting her departure, wishing her every success in her new appointment.
