FARM AND DAIRY.
JERSEYS, FRIESIANS AND AYRSHIRES. A great amount of interest is being shown by Taranaki ped : gree stock breeders in the forthcoming National Stud Stock Shows and Sales. These fixtures are to be conducted on the very sucecessful lines followed in North America by the pedigree breed societies of that country. Scottish breeders of Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus cattle were the pioneers in establishing these sales, and they have had a very important bearing upon the development of the breeds named. In fact, their reputation ha? been extended right throughout the world. A similar reputation can be established by New Zealand, stud stockbreeders adhering to a plan moulded from the ideas upon which the American and Scottish sales were established and developed. The first National Show and Sale will be that held upder the auspices of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Association. This sale will be held at Palmerston North on June 21st. This date will be very suitable for breeders through the Dominion, as the annual meeting of the Ayrshire Breeders’ Society will be held on the previous evening. The Ayrshire breed is making steady progress in New Zealand, and the National Show and Sale should assist in advancing its interests. Through testing the breed is gaining in favor with dairy-farmers, and the interest of the latter will be greatly quickened in the knowledge that a number of Ayrshires at present under test are likely to complete records ranging from 600 to 700 lb of butter fat. . The first National Jersey Show and Sale will be held at Auckland in July. It is understood that the Auckland Winter Show will now commence on 16th July, and this Sale will be one of the features of “Jersey Week” in the Queen City. The annual meeting of the Jersey Breeders’ Association is to be held at Auckland at the same time. Taranaki breeders are consigning some of their best stock to this sale, which has aroused great interest among the thousand odd Jersey breeders of the Dominion. Friesian breeders in Taranaki are also cons'gning some of the province’s best in Black and Whites to the first National Sale and Show of Friesians, which is also being held at Auckland in July. Among these will be progeny of some of the champion butter-fat producers of the Dominion. Entries for the various sales are now being received. The stock will be judged in three respective classes at each show There are two classes for females, those respectively under and over two years of age, and there will be one class for bulls. Substantial cash prizes will be awarded in each case, and the promoters of these fixtures, Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co.. Ltd., Stud Stock Salesmen, Wellington etc.,’ are also awarding a Silver Cup for the grand champion animal in each show The respective judges will be leading breeders— outstanding men in each of lntended to hold these National Sales at the centres fixed annually as ihe venues for the various Breed Societies annual meetings.
