MCLAREN’S TEAM.
MATCH AT PALMERSTON. SOME BRIGHT BATTING. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. High winds with previous heavy showers did not provide very pleasant conditions for the match between the'Englishmen and the minor associations. Although the weather remained fine the wicket was dead at the start, but the wind dried the surface quick-, ly, and it rolled out iu favor of .the batsmen. Hartley won the toss, the visitors commencing at 2.25 and batting all the afternoon. A bright but not faultless 136 was made by Cafi-horpe, and when stumps were drawn the Englishmen had 306 on for eight wickets. The batting commenced brightly, 100 being compiled in 61 minutes, but the latter part of the game became slower. W'tih the exception of Calthorpe, Gibson and Hartley, none of the others displayed international form, and the wickets went fairly cheaply. The ground fielding and throwing of the home team wm good, but their catching was faulty. The most successful bowlers were Grant (Manawatu) and W. W. Bennett (Rangitikei)* Details: - - - * ENGLAND.
