LAWN TENNIS.
TARANAKI v. AUCKLAND. WIN FOR TARANAKI. DETAILS OF THE PLAY. The annual match between Auckland and Taranaki was played at New Plymouth yesterday, Taranaki winning by 13 matches to 6. Notwithstanding rain in the morning, -a. good drying wind sprang up at about 11.45 and the courts were soon in splendid playing order. Good tennis was provided and there was no doubt about the superiority of the home team. By its victory, Taranaki holds the shield. In the following details Auckland players are mentioned first:— MEN’S SINGLES. A. S. C. Brown beat K. G. Archer B—G, W. Fotheringham beat C. J. Dickie 4—G, G—3, 6—3. A close game ensued, but eventually youth told against the experience of the older player. T. Johns lost to Dr. Allison 4—G, 4—6. Height and good net play told strongly in favor of Allison. M. Morrison lost to a. G. Wallace 3 —6, i 3—B. Morrison, who shows promise, put up a good fight, but the Waverley champion was too good. T. Clark lost to J. C. Nicholson 2—G, 3—6. Nicholson played consistently good tennis and won with comparative ease. N. Williams lost to C. B. Webster 2—G, 6—3, ]—6. Webster worked himself Into good positions for his overwhelming smashes, and his service-was too strong for his opponent. MEN’S DOUBLES. Morrison and Clark lost to Wallace and Dickie I—6, 7—5, I—6. Williams and Johns lost to Nicholson and Webster 2—6, 2—6. Fotheringham and Brown beat Allison and Archer 6—2, 6—2. COMBINED DOUBLES. Miss Payton and Morrison lost to Miss Brewster and Nicholson o—3, 2—6. Miss Ramsay and Clark lost to Mrs. Grant and Webster 3—6, 5—7. Miss Macfarlane and Fotheringham beat Miss Simpson and Allison 4—6, 6—2, 9—7. Miss Knight and Johns lost to Miss Ballantyne and Wallace 2—6. 4—6. LADIES’ SINGLES. Miss Knight beat Miss Ballantyne 6—4, 6—l. In the first set Miss Ballantyne put up a great fight, but. gave up hope in the second. Miss Payton" lost to Miss Brewster 4—6, 2 G. Miss Payton was playing well up to form, but Miss Brewster drove with consistent accuracy. Miss Ramsay lost lo Miss Simpson I—G,1 —G, 3 6. Miss Simpson was playing well and Miss Ramsay was slightly Indisposed. Miss Macfarlane lost Lo Mrs. Grant 4—G, 5—7. A very even game took place, productive of some fine long rallies. LADIES’ DOUBLES. Misses Knight and Payton boat Misses Ballantyne and Brewster 3—6, 9—7, 9—7, after a very even and Interesting game. Misses Ramsay and Macfarlane lost to Mrs. Grant and Mi§S' 'Simpson 4—6, 5—7.
s' INTER-CLUS MATCHES.
The following is the New Plymouth B team to play Siwrtsdale on the Vivian Street courts at 2 p.m. to-morrow: Misses Greatbatch and Valentine, Mrs. Balharry, Miss Winfield; Messrs. Johnson, Merron, Fookes, Fyfe, Valentine, Ballantyne. Any player unable to play is to notify the secretary.
