ASSAULT ON A STEAMER.

TWO FIREMEN CONVICTED. By Tclocrnph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Richard Williams and Patrick Byrne, two firemen, appeared at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with, assaulting, Leonard Callimore, a greaser on the Wingatui. Byrne was also charged with the theft of several articles, tho property of Callimore, who is a free laborer.

The evidence showed that accused, v’ith others, went on board the vessel and assaulted Callimore and that Byrne ransacked his locker. Williams was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment, and Byrne was fined £2O for assault, in default two months, and £lO, in default three months, on the charge of theft.
