TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. THE CONCLUSION OF PLAY. FINALS OF COMBINED DOUBLES. The finals of the combined doubles, championships and handicap, in the Taranaki Lawft Tennis Association’s tournament were decided yesterday In, fine weather. A bruize hampered the players, and the courts were slower than on previous days. Details:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS. COMBINED DOUBLES, Final.—C. B. Webster and Miss Payton beat J. C. Nicholson and Miss Brewster G—l, 3—6, Gi—3. Good tenuis resulted in a very even match, the winners gaining the victory by slightly better combination and more net play. Webster and Miss Payton started well, Webster winning the first game by a service- ace. Good driving by Miss Payton and a double fault by Nicholson, gave Webster the second game, 2—o. Notwithstanding good driving by .Miss Brewster and welt placed smashes by Nicholson, Webster and Miss rayton eventually took the set in 5 more games, 6—l. In the second set keen tennis was provided :\nd good placements by Miss Brewster and clever net play by Nicholson gave the set to Nicholson and Miss Brewster 6—3. In the third set, Webster led in the first game by 40—15, and after a long rally between the ladies, Miss Payton took the game with a smash, I—o. Smashes by Webster gained him the next game, but Nicholson and Miss Brewster rallied and, took the third game by steady play. After three deuces in the next game Webster won it by a smash 3—l. Webster's service and good driving by Miss Payton gained the next game, 4—l. The advantage varied and good net play by Nicholson and fine drives by Miss Brewster brought the score to 5—3. A hard smash by Miss Payton, followed by an ah er from Webster took the next game, the sot and the championship, after three deuces, 6 HANDICAP EVENTS. COMBINED DOUBLES. Third Round.—Johnson and Mrs. Horner (owe 15) beat ’Grant and Mrs. Grant (owe 30 4—6) J-r-2; Shearer and Miss Malcolm (scr.) beat Mackay and ?.Ilss Wood (rec. 15 3—G) 7 6, Berg and Miss Boon (owe 15 2—G) beat King and Miss Brewster (owe 40) 9—7: Boon and Miss Ludlow (scr.) won from Powdrell and Miss Ringland (owe 30 4—6) by default. Semi-finals.—Johnson and Mrs. Horner heat Shearer and Miss Malcolm 9—3; Boon and Miss Ludlow won from Berg and Miss Boon by default. Final.—Johnson and Mrs. Horner beat Boon and Miss Ludlow 9—6.
