LAWN TENNIS.

TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. HOOD PROGRESS MADE. NEARING THE END. A change to fine weather, helped on Thursday night by a high wind, hardened the Now Plymouth Club’s courts sufficiently to enable the second day’s play In connection with the Taranaki Lawp Tennis Association’s annual' tournament to be proceeded with yesterday. Both championship and handicap events were well advanced by 7 p.m., when the falling light caused play to stop, and the preliminary rounds, with a few exceptions, were disposed of. The semi-finals will be decided this morning, and it Is hoped to have all the finals played off this afternoon. Conditions yesterday were scarcely ideal for tennis, a tricky wind which was blowing across the courts most of the day making accurate play difficult. Players who played frequently to the side line were, therefore, at u disadvantage. Nevertheless the standard of play was good, and some very interesting matches resulted. In the men’s championship singles Wallace, last year’s winner. Is doing well. He disposed of Ranford In the second round, whilst in the third round Nicholson, the prominent New Plymouth player, fell to him 6—l, 6—l in two straight sets. Dickie, who is obviously “off color,” succumbed to Grant in the second round. Grant is playing a good, steady game, but was eliminated by Webster in the third round. Andrews, the young Palmerston North player, maintained ills goo«L form, and is in the semi-finals with Wallace, Webster, and the Winner of the unfinished match between Johnson and Allison. Opinion seems to favor the chances of Wallace and Andrews fighting nut the final. The outstanding game in the men’s championship doubles was that between PowdrellAndrews and Morrison-Lusk. After the Litter had taken a strenuously fought first set hy 13—11. the other pair livened up in the next set, and a long game ended In favor of Morrison and Lusk. All four players are young mon of great promise, and their play was keenly watched by a good crowd of spectators. Niciinls.cn- Webster, All iron- Archer, and Wai-lacc-Dlckio are the ether pairs left to decide the semi-finals and final. The result appears very open.

Miss Kni*bt, the Auckland player, appeared for the first, time yesterday and worked her way successfully through the three rounds cf the ladies’ championship singles Misses Brewster. Ballantyne and Payton, all nf whom

pre playing good tennis, arc the other semi finalists. In the doubles ‘he competitors have been narrowed down to Misses Knight and Pay ton, Misses Ballantyne and Brewster, and Misses Greathatch and Simpson. The championship combined doubles is open, those showing the best form being Wallace and Mrs. Wallace. Morrison and Miss Knight, Webster and Miss Payion, and Nicholson and Miss Brcwstor. The last-named uair had to fight hard to boat Andrews and Miss Valentine 6_4, F,—7. 6—2.

The boys’ championship has been narrowed to Ballantyne and Mackay, the former’s chances being favored. In the girls’ singles Miss L. Ballantyne and Miss S. Mills meet In the final. Some of iho handicap rounds have still to be completed, but all the events give promise of interesting finals, with the probability of well-known players being well in the running. Detaiis of yesterday’s play are:— CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS MEN’S SINGLES.
