INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent). Next Monday will be the fortyeighth anniversary of the official christening of Inglewood by the late Mr. A. Standish, acting for the superintendent of Taranaki, Mr. F. A. Carrington, and supported by members of the Provincial Council, the superintendent being unable to be present. Naturally, after the passing of so many -years, but few of those present at the ceremony, on the bank of the kurapete stream on January 22, 1875, near where the railway now crosses, are still alive. For a good many years after the original function, each recurring anniversary was made an occasion for holding a sports meeting, but of late no special notice has been taken of the day. though the twenty-fifth return of it, in 1900, was duly celebrated. So far this year no steps have been taken to mark the occasion, nor are any likely. The heavy rain of Saturday and Sunday was responsible for the loss of a small, but, to local settlers, important bridge over a tributary of the Waitara river on the Ngatoro road, near Purangi, in an area lately included in the Clifton county, but now added to the Inglewood county. The mishap was reported to Mr. A. Corkill by telephone on Monday, and he at once got into communication with Mr. Walter Bowman. of Purangi, and authorised him to effect repairs, with the result that word was received later that the settlers would be able to get their cream to the main road for delivery by Wednesday. The seven-a-side rifle match has again had to be postponed owing to the wet weather, and it is now hoped to hold it on Thursday, the 25th inst. Contestants were hoping that by holding it yesterday they would have the pleasure of seeing a very keen rifle enthusiast of older Inglewood days present, Mr. Joseph George, who has been spending a short holiday here. Mr. George camo from his present home at Remuera to visit members of his family end old friends in this and neighbouring parts of North Taranaki, amongst all of whom he is always sure of a warm welcome.
