WATERSIDERS’ FEDERATION.

The Watersiders’ Federation conference concluded to-day. It was decided to endeavor to obtain representation on harbor boards. THEFTS FROM A STEAMER. Wellington, Jan. 18. Gus. Nelson, a waterside worker was sentenced to two terms of imprisonment, totalling two months, by Mr. Page, S.M., on a charge of stealing a bottle of whisky and some soap from the Otarama. Mr. Page said although there might be distressing circumstances he could not grant probation or inflict a fine. Watersiders had had ample warning. FINED FOR BETTING. Auckland, Jan. 18. John Elderton, found guilty of loitering in Symonds Street, for the purpose of making bets, was fined £75. The police describe him as a half-way man. making neither very big nor very small bets. NURSERYMEN’S CONFERENCE. Wellington, Jan. 18. The nurseymen’s conference decided that the next conference be held at Palmerston North. Remits were carried urging the council to support the suggestion to iset apart a portion of Somes Island as a plant quarantine station; that the attention of the Government be drawn to the danger of the introduction from Australia and the United States of America of tomato wilt, also a white snail which attacks citrus trees.
