WHEAT CARGOES STEADY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Jan. 16. Wheat cargoes are steady, but the decline in exchanges accentuates the dullness. There Is only small business in parcels. WELLINGTON WOOL SALE. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wellington, Jan. 18. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile report that the third Wellington wool sale of the season was held yhterday. Our catalogue comprised an excellent selection, drawn from Marlborough, Nelson. Taranaki. Walrarapa, and Manawatu districts. Competition was extremely good, and prices can be considered distinctly dearer than the previous Wellington sales and quite on a par with recent sales held at Napier. For the well-known Hawkesbury merino clip grown by Mr. C. F. J. Coulter, of Marlborough, we obtained the record price for New Zealand of 29’4d per lb. for greasy wool. As compared with December sales fine halfbred fetched Id higher, ■ coarser and medium higher, fine crossbred Id to l%d higher, medium crossbred and coarse crossbred l%d to 2d higher, low crossbred %d to Id higher, lambs l%d to 2d higher. All skirtings showed a substantial advance. The sale closed with a firm tone. MELBOURNE WOOL SALES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, Jan. 17. The wool sales showed keenness of competition and an advance of prices upon December rates, equivalent to the Sydney sales. NEWTON KING, LTD.. REPORT. At Urenui on the Bth Mistnnt, which was the opening sale of the new rear, a fair offering of both sheep and cattle camo forward, all of which sold. 4-6-tooth wether- 265. mixed 2tooths (small) 21s Bd, f.m. ewes 19s, light fat bullocks £5 17s Gd to £6 7s W, 3%-year fiteers to £3 16s, 2%-year do to £3 6s. weaner Jersey heifers £2 16s, 15-month empty heifers £2 10s to £2 15s, 15-month heifers r.w.t. £3 to £4 15s, forward cows to £3, light fat do £4 ss. better do £5 10s to £5 12s 6d. At Stratford on the 9th instant there was a small yarding of cattle only. Quotations, fat and forward cows to £4 6s, store do to £2 17s, boner bulls to £5 ss. cows (In milk) £5. At. Inglewood on the following day we had a good yarding of both sheep and cattle and effected a very satisfactory clearance. Prices for sheep and store cattle were distinctly en-

couraging. In the dairy section we disposed : of a dairy herd on behalf of Mr. G. Barrock. The cows were mostly in milk and made the high average of between £8 &nd £9. Quotations : Ewes and lambs (all counted) ,23s Bd, mixed 2-tooths 21s 6d to 24s 6d, fat wethers 29s to 30s 6d, 15-month heifers r.w.b. £3 19s to £4 ss, light fat heifers £3 6s 6d to £4, fat and forward cows £3 6s Gd to £4 ss, 3%year steers £4 3s 6d, cows and calves £3 to £4 7s, boner bulls to £4 2s -6d, dairy cows (in milk) best £9 5s to £lO 15s, others to £B, springing cows £6 ss, heifers to £5 ss, aged gelding £l2 10s, gig piare £8 10s. At Kohuratahi on the same day, in conjunction with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, sheep made up the bulk of our entry, for which there was a spirited sale. Fat wethers 30s Bd, forward do 26s 5d tn 2Ss Gd, 2-tooth wethers 23s Gd to 255, small do 20s Id, mixed aged ewes 21s, f.m. do 19s 3d, failing mouth do (culls) 10s, best 3’<>-year steers £4 13s, aged bullocks (poor colors) £3 10s, 2%-year steers to £3 10s, 18-month de £2 6s, 15-month empty heifers £2 12s, boner bulls to £3 10s.

At Makahu on the 12th instant we conducted a clearing sale on behalf of Mr. W. R. McLeod. Buyers were in attendance from all parts of Taranaki and from as far south as Wanganui. The sale was keenly contested throughout, especially for sheep, prices for which, considering their quality, were exceptionally good. Local competition prevented many lines from leaving the district. Quotations: 4 and 6-tooth wethers 28s 4d, 2-tooth do 255, 4 and 6-tooth ewes 28s lOd, 2-tooth do to 24s 9d, 4 and 5-year do 23s 7d, f.m. do 18s 3d, fat and forward ewes. 265, mixed aged ewes and wethers 20s 3d to 23s 6d, store lambs (shorn) 17s Id, seconds 10s, cull do 6s, bullocks £4 16s, 2V£-year steers £3 ss, 18-month Polled Angus steers and heifers £3 6s, Polled Angus cows and calves £5 10s, Polled Angus bull £B, Shetland ponies to £8 10s. At Rahotu on the 11th Instant the yarding was small, but everything sold. Store cows to £2 10s, steers £4 6s, cows in milk £B.
