AN EEL’S APPETITE.
RAVAGES AMONG TROUT. An interesting photograph of two trout in an excellent state of preservation is in the possession of ivlr. C. I. Daeent, of Wellington. These two fish, one lOin. long and the other !)fin., were found in the stomach of an eel 1811). in weight, caught in the Mangatainoka River. The eel’s stomach also contained two other trout about the same size, but were partly digested, and could not be photographed. Another photograph in the possession of Mr? Dasent shows an eel 351 b. in weight caught in the Karori Stream, and which must have in its day consumed thousands of fish. While on the subject of eels, Mr. Dasent said that some time ago the curator at Masterton was rearing 500 fry, and was astonished one day to find that they had all disappeared. Some time later be discovered an eel of some 241 b. weight which was full of fry from the mouth tc the tail.
