BABY FOUND BURIED.
OTHER CHILDREN MISSING. THE NEWLANDS CASE. By Telegraph -Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 17. Daniel Richard Cooper and Martha. Cooper were- before the Court to-day on charges of unlawfully detaining an infant child and the male accused with supplying A. Sutherland with a noxious thing, knowing the same was to be used for an illegal purpose. They wore remanded to January 24. Application for bail for the female accused was made and strongly opposed by Mr. Macassey for the Crown, as it might, he said, defeat the ends of justice. At various times four illegitimate children had been placed in charge of accused and they had failed to give account of three of them and had made contradictory statements concerning the fourth. Besides, the “body of a child had been found buried on premises recently occupied by the accused. Under these circumstances, if bail war granted there might he serious results. Bail was not allowed.
It is understood that Messrs. Wilford and Hanlon have been retained to da* fend aoouied.
