Mr F. W. Carter, inspector of the Bank of Now Zealand, is at present in New Plymouth in connection with his official duties.
Dr. T. N. Watt’s appointment as medical officer in c.haige of the Opunake Cottage Hospital has been approved by the Minister of Health. Mr Harry Gilmour, an old resident of New Plymouth, is visiting here. Air A. Kinnbell, Under-Secretary of the Mines Department, is at present on a visit to New Plymouth. '•
A resolution of sympathy witn Air 8. Vickers in the loss of his daughter was carried by the Taranaki Hospital Board Yesterday.
The names of Misses Averil R. Larsen and Rhona Hoben, have been added to the waiting list for appointments as a probationers under t.ie Taranaki Hospital Board. Miss Gwendoline Day, formerly mpupil of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, and now of Wellington Training College, gained a pass in French at the B.A. examination held in November. Mr. Walter Blackie, a weli-known farmer, of Taieri, Otago, is visiting Eltham. With him is his son, Air. Thomas Blackie, who is a resident of Siam, and is spending a holiday in New Zealand.
Mr. E. Sloonmbe, B.Se., science instructor at the Hawera Technical High ■School, lias resigned. Mr. Slocomhe will be leaving New Zealand for England, where he will be continuing his studies.
An old resident of Taranaki in the person of Mr Daniel O’Sullivan, of Waiteka Road, Opunake, died on Tuesday. He was a well-known farmer, and had been in the Opunake district for 42 years. He was born in County Kerry, Ireland. Sister I. B. Smith, ward sister of Hie New Plymouth Hospital, tendered her resignation to the Hospital Board yesterday. Sister Smith intends to leave for England next month. Nurse A. F. Street also tendered her resignation owing to ill-health. The board wished Sister Smith every succe&s, and a pleasant voyage. The death ha/j occurred at Brooklyn of Air. John Thomson at the age of 73 years. Going to sea early in the East India trade, he later attended Queen’s University, Belfast, and graduated in 1871 as Bachelor of Engineering. He arrived in New Zealand in 1877, and was employed on marine engineering work by the Government. Air. Thomson was later connected with Patea, Waitara, New Plymouth, and Gisborne Harbour Boards, and was in 1891 appointed lecturer in applied mechanics at Otago University, a post he relinquished to become Government engineer at Greymouth. He retired in 1909. He had a son, who pre-deceased him, and leaves a widow.
The death is announced of Mr. H. Oakley, of Stoke (Nelson), after a long illness. Deceased, who was 69 years of ago, was an enthusiastic volunteer in the early days, and rose to be a lieutenant in the old City Rifles. He was also a first-class marksman, and at various times held the championship of the Wellington district, Patea district, and the Nelson district. The champion belt now being competed for at the annual meetings of the Nelson Rifle Association was won outright by the late Air. Oakley, who handed it back to the association. For 20 years deceased was in the tinsmith department of Kirkpatrick’s factory, and later was at the Stoke canning works. The late Air. Oakley held high office in the Druids, and was a charter member of the Nelson branch.
At the Victorial College council (Wellington) last night. Professor D. C. H. Florance, of Hong Kong University, was appointed to the chair of physics in place of Professor Marsden, who has resigned. Professor Florance is a New Zealander, who has had a brilliant career in research work under Sir Ernest Rutherford. He has been lecturer and demonstrator at Manchester .University. He is 38 years of age. He saw active service in the European war. He has had wide experience in laboratory organisation as a demonstrator and lecturer. He graduated in New Zealand as ALA., with first class honours, in 1908, and Master of Science in 1909. The appointment was made on Sir Ernest Rutherfords recommendation out of 13 applicants from various parts of the Empire. —Press Association.
