MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held here to-day before Mr. A. M. Mowlem. S.M.
For alleged failure to keep a proper time and wages book, as required by the Shops and Offices Act, showing the names of assistants employed, the class of work informed, hours worked, wages paid, etc., Herbert -Toll, draper, was prosecuted by the Labor Department. After hearing the evidence of Inspector Bonnett, who laid the charge, the Magistrate said defendant had been guilty of a technical breach of the Act. A conviction w'as. entered without fine and an order made for the payment of costs (13/-).
A juvenile offender, aged 13 years, was charged with the theft of £3 from the pocket of a freezing works employee on December 19. The boy pleaded guilty and was admonished by the Magistrate, who adjourned the ease for six months. An undertaking was given by the parents to refund the 15/-
the boy-had spent. The balance of £2 15s was recovered by the boy when accosted with the theft. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the undefended ease of Clifton County Council v. AV. E. Hawke, £l4 7s (costs £2 16s). At the suit of E.' Reynolds an order was made requiring A. S. Hill to pay the sum of £2 15s lOd on or before January 30, in default three days’ imprisonment.
