BAND CONTEST.

MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. TRAMWAY CONCESSIONS WANTED. The matter of tramway concessions to visiting bandsmen during the band contest week in Now Plymouth, February 26 to March 3, was re-opened at rhe meeting of the contest committee last night. Those present were: Messrs. H. S. Brookman (chairman), G. Saunders, A. L. Humphries, F. Newall, E. Sole, F. Coleman, R. H. Cattle/ and E. L. Humphries (secretary) • Mn Brookman stated that it would not cost the council anything nor would it cost them anything individually. He thought they should persist in their application, as the contest would be a good advertisement for the town. Mr. •Saunders suggested that they should make the application for bandsmen travelling with their Instruments. That would preclude “joy riding.” Mr. A. L. Humphries said he thought they should point, out to the council that the bandsmen would not have a great many opportunities for “joy riding/’ while if the passes were granted only for bandsmen travelling in uniform that would be an end to the “joy riding” aspect. They should also point out that the passes were granted in other centres. Mr. Newall said that anyone who had been associated with a band contest knew that bandsmen had very few opportunities of using the trams. He thought that the council had been under a misapprehension that the bandsmen would monopolise the trams for a week. That would not be the case. It was unanimously decided to make another application for the concession.

■Lieut.-'Col. E. P. Cox and Staff Ser-geant-major A. E. Stevens notified their acceptance of appointments as military judges. Mr. A. Davies, Stratford, is to be asked to act as judge of instruments. The North Island Brass Bands Association is to be written to asking them to appoint an efficient timekeeper.
