TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The Feildlng Jockey Club’s spring meenng opens to-day. Acceptances are only fair, though some good horses are engaged. Muraahi is fancied for the St. Andrew’s Handicap, and is nicely weighted with 7.8. Mark Time shapes like a stayer, and it will be interesting to see If he runs up to the form of his big brother, Marqueteur. Rapine Is well treated with 8.6 in the Flying Handicap, and Morose (7.5) should be all the better for the race she had at Ashhurst. Ka.il and Mattock are likely to show up in hurdle events at the meeting, and in the minor races Refrigeration, Snatcher, Pantier, Pillage, Hindi and Blissfulness should carry big money. The Feilding Stakes will attract a few smart sprinters, notably The Hawk, Epitaph. and Rational, and a pretty race should ensue. Luke Wilson reached Feilding this week with The Hawk, Maloha, Viyella. and Ton Taua. J. .Tefferd brought Epitaph and Rapine. A number of Taranaki horses were expected to arrive yesterday afternoon, Fred Jenkins has taken out a riding license, and will make his reappearance on Mattock at Feilding to-day. He Is a game boy, and should not want for rides over sticks. Mr. M. J. Hnrtigan. of Tarata, had the misfortune to lose a fine colt by Mountain Knight—Contralto recently. The foal, which was a particularly well-grown one, was dropped near' a barbed-wire fence, in which it became entangled, being badly cut about, and bleeding internally. Everything possible was done to save the colt, hut in vain. Contralto visits Campfire this season.
