BOXING.
TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the committee of the Taranaki Boxing Association was held last evening. Present: Messrs. E. Jackson (chairman), E. Whittle, M. D. Stagpoole, W. Richards, W. Yardley, W. N. Stephenson, N. B. Howell, A. Whittaker, G. Jago, and the secretary. The chairman reported that some rearrangement of the amateur preliminaries had taken place. The following had now been (matched: Marshall v. Walker, Barlow v. Field, Parker v. Cudby. Several matters in connection with the forthcoming tournament were discussed. It was reported that both professional contestants were in the pink of condition. Whitaker fought a fast spar last night, doing ten rounds and showing splendid condition. THE FORTHCOMING CONTEST. TOURNAMENT AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Thursday night should see a big crowd at the Coronation Hall to witness the contest between Cyril Whitaker, of New Plymouth, versus Les. Gleeson, of Australia. The match should be particularly Interesting from the fact that the styles of the two men are entirely different. Gleeson, a fighter from the heels up, likes nothing better than to stand toe to toe and mix it with his opponent tn the American style. Whitaker, a boxer pure and simple, standing up straight and using his left after th/ English fashion, as taught in the Jem Mace school. Whitaker uses straight punches with both hands. Gleeson hooks and swings. Can Gleeson land his trusty right on Whitaker’s point? Is Cyril fast enough to evade that same right?
