TRAGEDY RECALLED.
MOTHER AND DAUGHTER. WHEREABOUTS OF HUSBAND. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Monday. A tragedy that occurred over nine months ago at Clifton, Sumner, is recalled by the arrest, in the Auckland district, of a man who is believed to he the husband of a woman who was found asphyxiated with her daughter The police at Christchurch t-o-day reoived a telegram stating that the man had been arrested on a warrant. It ie understood the charge is one of obtaining goods by false pretences. At. the inquest into the deaths of Janet Scott and her daughter, Gladys-, held in Christchurch on January 13, the coroner returned a verdict to the effect that the two deceased died of carbon-monoxide gas poisoning administered by Janet Scott, who had been deserted by her husband, E. T. Scott, after obtaining from her ouch money as she possessed. One witness said he let the house where the tragedy occurred to Scott. He knew nothing about Scott, who said he was a secret service man and had just been transferred from Wellington and so could not get any references. Later he said he had held the rank of Lieut-Colonel and had been elected a member of the Canterbury Club. Witness visited the house several times, but saw no one there. Not apenny of rent had been paid for the house. From Scott’s conversation be understood he was a man of means, ami his wife said he wasrthe most decorated man in New Zealand. A constable described the finding o! the bodies in the house. The body of Mrs. Scott was covered by two woollen rugs, and about IS in. from her a rubber tube connected with the gas was ’ranging. The gas tap was turned on. The body of the daughter was- beside that of the mother. There was no letter from the deceased. A taxi-driver said Scott had borrowed money from him. 'Scott told witness he had. won £5OOO in Tattersall’s. On January 4 Mrs. Scott called up witness nn the telephone. asked if he had seen her husband. 'She said she had had a tiff with him on the Monday night over money matters and she had not seen him since. When witness mentioned the win in Tattersall’s. she said it was news- to her. He had got £3OO out of her.
