CANTERBURY MARKETS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Business has been fairly brisk during the week, and as a result of an Improving market for wool and meat there is a npich more buoyant attitude generally. This is particularly noticeable as far as North Island merchants are concerned, and they are now prepared to operate more extensively. Interest has been imparted to the new season’s wheat prices by the report that tmlllers have done business nt 5s at country stations. Oats have also been sold forward per Australia for March-April delivery on a basis of 2s 5d to 2s fid to farmers. Still, a good den! of anxiety exists in parts of the Commonwealth on account of the dry season, and continued inquiry is expected. Wliite clover and eowgrass have both been the medium of considerable business with the Old Country. White clover has lieen sold at 225 s per o.wt. cj.f. for super machine-dressed, equal to Is fid and Is Rd per lb. to farmers, and cowgrnss nt 135 s to 145 s per cwt. f.o.b. from lid to U%d to farmers. Business has been fairly heavy in cowgrass. the forecastea glutting of the Home market with American cowgrass not materialising. Soth perennial and Italian ryegrass are meeting with fl run inquiry on a basis of up to 5s fid f.o.b. sacks in for machine dressed, or about 4s at country stations. Barley is mooting with a. revival, and a fair amount of secondary malting has been sold at 3g 9d per bushel at country stations. Several extensive shipments have gone Home. Business has been done in the new season’s crop at 4s 3d per bushel. Reports from the south are that Wakatlpu growers have sold at 3s fid to 4s fid at Frankton wharf, Lake Wakatipu, according to the licensing vote, and it is understood one or more North Island brewers have (jontrgeted at 3s 3d and 4s 9d. It is understood there is a very much reduced area in harley this season. Speculation business in the new season’s potatoes has taken place from £5 to £5 ss. These prices have been the basis of the operations for whites for April-May delivery, but down to £4 12s 6d has been the figure for f.a.q.s. LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 22nd instant:— Tallow.—Market dull. Last quotations November 15: Fine mutton, 43s 3d per cwt.; zood beef, 41s fid per cwt.; mixed, 37s per I|Wt. New Zealand Frozen Meat.—Lamb and mutton, no change In market. Lost quotation November 15: Lamb (average) ll%d per lb.; mutton, wether and maiden ewe, light B%d per lb., heavy 7%d per lb.; ewe, light B%d per lb., heavy 6 3-8 d per lb. Beef.—Ox hinds 4 5-8 d per lb., fores 3’4d per lb.; cow hinds 3 7-8 d per lb., fores 2%d per lb. LONDON WOOL SALES. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 22nd instant: — Wool Sales.—There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by home, Continental and American buyers being keen, and prices, compared with the close of preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, lower for merino, of which there was only a small quantity catalogued; fine crossbred pf” 1 to 5 per cent, higher; medium crossbred 10 per cent, higher; and coarse crossbred 5 per cent, higher.
