The police recently raided premises in Riddiford Street and made some arrests on a charge of using the building as a common gaming house. Light fines were imposed except in the case of G. A. Brown. In evidence the police stated he had taken £7OO after the Christchurch and Ashburton races, and a further sum over the Ashhurst meeting. As two months ago he waa fined £4O, the Magistrate this time inflicted a fine of £75.
