WATERSIDERS’ WAGES.
COURT AWARD CONDEMNED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 23. Mr. Roberts, president of the Watersiders’ Federation, has issued a statement denouncing the judgment of the Arbitration Cojjrt, which he calls “a sentence.” He says the court has not given them justice and has inflicted on them many economic hardships and for that reason the waterside workers have finished with the Arbitration Court for all time. The judgment of the court was a judgment on the court itself. The award will be submitted to the whole of the watersiders for their approval or otherwise, as no self-respecting official could honestly advise men to accept wages and conditions which would mean sure starvation. Regarding the new preference clause he says the court has given the unions a death blow,, for it has definitely stated that the amount payable per annum shall not exceed £l, or 44d per week. This means the unions cannot carry on. They must either forgo the ; r preference clause or dissolve the unions.
