Cross and Blackwell’s lods for the year was £1,072,000. The chairman reported at the annual meeting that the losses were largely due to the duty on sugar exceeding the value of the commodity. It was, be said, difficult for jam manufacturers to compete with margarine. The company is claiming half a million excess profits duty from the Government. WHEAT PRICES. Prices at Westfield to-day were:— Beef.—Average yarding; prices again in advance and 10s to 12s higher than last week’s: extra choice ox to 26s per 1001 b., choice ox 20s to 245, others 17s to 19s, plain 14s to 18s: choice young cow and heifer beef 19s to 235. good 14s to 18s. plain 10s to 13s. Calves.—Fair yarding and prices better than last week: runners £2 10s to £3 15s, heavy vealers £2 5s to £3 ss, lighter £2 to £3, others 25s to 37s 6d; fresh droppers 4s to Bs. Sheep.—Medium yarding and prices the same as last week: extra heavy wethers 28s to 335, good 25s to 28s 3d. others 19s to 235: Oest ewes 22s to 265, good 18s to 235, others 12s to 17s. Pigs.—Average yarding and prices improved; baconers £3 to £4 ss. porkers £2 to £3, ‘ choppers £3 to £4 10s, stores 28s to 30s.
