PARADE OF TROOPS.

ROUTE MARCH LAST NIGHT. A khaki-clad column of troops has become an unfamiliar sight during the last three or four years, but memories of the war period were recalled last night when the headquarters and “A” companies of the 4th Battalion, Wellington Regiment, headed by the regimental band ’ with torch-bearers, marched through town. The parade was in charge of Major Bell, DJS.O., general staff officer of the Central Command, with headquarters at Palmerston North, other officers present being Lieut.-Col. E. P. Cox, officer commanding the 4th Battalion (W.1.R.), Captain D. E. Bremner. M.C., staff officer in command of No. 8 R.D., and Lieutenants L. W. Andrew. V.C., and A. Smith, of New Plymouth.

The idea of the route march was to give variety to the training of the territorials. The route followed was via Gill Street to Hobson Street, thence along Hobson, Lemon, Liardet anu Devon Streets to Queen Street, where the parade halted for five minutes, proceeding then via St. Aubyn and Gill Streets back to the Coronation Ha l. The parade, aided by stirring march airs played by the band, went off with a swing and the troops were afterwards congratulated on their creditable bearing.
