CORRESPONDENCE.
THE UNEMPLOYED FUND. (To the Editor.) Sir, —So ' far the donations to this fund are very satisfactory, but a considerable amount is yet needed. My suggestion is that all those landlords ■ who are charging from £2 to £2 5s 1 per week for houses which should only I be bringing £1 to £1 5s should give : all over 8 per cent, of the capital value of their houses. Some landlords must be getting 12 and 15 per cent, on their capital value. I venture to say that house rents in New Plymouth are higher than anywhere in the Dominion, outside of the four centres. It is high time that some action was taken to combat this growing evil. Tf landlords charge exorbitant rents they should be taxed heavily on the amount over the fair rent. Could not some kind-hearted solicitor (anonymously) give some advice through the medium of your paper in order that tenants could be guided as to what to do? I would like to suggest that a committee be set up to investigate. Householders and tenants could then be invited to state what rents are being paid. -I think it would open the eyes as to what big rents are being paid.—T am, etc., “•DOWN WITH THE RENTS.”
