A MAIL CONTRACT
SAN FRANCISCO TO SYDNEY. DIFFICULTY OVER RENEWAL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received July 4, 9.30 p.m. / Washington, July 3>l No renewal has yet been made of the Oceanic Steamship Company’s mailcarrying contract between America and . Australia, which lapsed on Saturday. It is understood the company declared it would suspend sailings immediately unless the Governments paid double thg amount now stipulated. The company asks for approximately 360 thousand dollars yearly, and the Post Office Department declines to meet the increase, since it feels it will probably succeed in getting a foreign line to carry the mail for one hundred thousand dollars per annum. It has asked the company to continue handling mails for a period of several months longer at the existing rates, allowing an opportunity to place the question before Congress with a request for an appropriation. The Poet Office Department is without funds to meet the increase, but the Shipping Board and the Navy Department favour granting the increase. No word has yet been received from the company' concerning this.—Aus.-N-Z. Cable
