THE TARANAKI CONVENTION. DELEGATES WELCOMED. The Taranaki provincial convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union will be held in New Plymouth to-day, and a reception was accorded the delegates at a gathering held at St. Andrew’s Hall, New Plymouth, last night.

The Mayor (Mr. F. E- Wilson) presided, and after the hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers” had been sung and the -Crusade Psalm (No. 146) had been read, Mr. Wilson briefly welcomed the delegates, stating that he recognised that the W.C.T.U. was working for the betterment of mankind. He hoped their convention would be fraught with good results. Mrs. Griffin also spoke a few words of welcome.

The provincial president (Mrs. Phillips) responded to the Mayor’s welcome. She stated that their union now had members in fifty different countries, and all were doing splendid work. The coming polls Jn December were referred to, the speaker predicting that a great victory for prohibition would be achieved.

An address was given by Archdeacon Evans, followed by a short musical programme. the following contributing items: Miss M. Thompson, Miss Gwen Godfrey. Mrs. Goodey, Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Thompson, Messrs. Fredric, Bellrineer, Holder and Reeve.

The convention will open in the Whiteley Hall at 9.30 this morning.
