HAWERA SHOW.

OPENING TO-DAY. RECORD ENTRIES. SOME OF THE AWARDS. The progress made each year by the Dominion Show at Hawera since its inception thirteen years ago has been remarkable. As a result of the enterprise and organising abilities of those organising it the show has rapidly taken its -place in the forefront of the winter shows of the Dominion. That progress ■has been well maintained, this year, and it is questionable if there is another winter show in the Dominion that can equal it. Every foot of the vast space available in the various halls has been taken up with displays of machinery, farming apparatus, and tradesmen’s displays, all attractively set out. The competitive section this year is a very large and. varied one. The school section, which is'(specially catered for, has drawn over 1200 entries from all over the North Island, and there has been keen competition for the handsome shields that these sections carry. Everything will be in readiness for the opening ceremony, which will be performed by Mr. E. Dixon, M.P- for Patea, at 2 p.m. to-day. Mr. L. O. Hooker, the secretary and manager of the show, has, as usual, made complete arrangements to ensure the smooth running of the show, and yesterday saw the bulk of the exhibits I benched.* Indeed, so far advanced is • this department that the awards have already been made in several sections.

The bulk of the judging in the schools’ section has been completed. In the writing ..nd essay sections there was vdry keen competition, entries being received from al! parts of the North Island, and the judges had a very difficult task in making the awards. The shield presented by Messrs. Bennett and Sutton for most points in writing was won by Hastings Central with 71 points, Dannevirke North being runners up with 44 points. This is the third year in succession the same school (previously the Hastings District High School) has won the shield. Oaonui won it in 1919 and West End (New Plymouth) in 1918. The Challenge Shield presented by the Hawera Star proprietary for the most points in essay sections for primary schools was won by the Petone Convent with 38 points, the New Plymouth B.H.S. being second with 13 points. This is the second year in succession that Petone Convent has won the shield. West End (New Plymouth) won it the three previous years. PUBLIC SCHOOL DIVISION. School garden notebook.
