Patterson beat Kingscote 6—4. 3—6, 5—7, ■6—4, 6—3. This was one of the most exciting struggles seen at Wimbledon. Other results were: Cochet beat Mathey, Brugnon beat Ritchie, Lycett beat Morpurg, Turnbull beat F. Lowe, Kingscote beat Gobert. In the ladies’ matches, second round, Mrs. Ryan beat .Mrs. McNair, and Mrs. Mallory won her round. In the first round ~of the doubles Anderson and Lycett beat Kingley and Winder 6—2, ' 2—6, 6—l, 9—7 ; Patterson and O’Hara Wood beat Lamb and Jarvis 6—2, 6—o, 6—o. The match between Madamolselle Lenglen and Mrs. McKanc created great excitement. There were fourteen thousand spectators, which is a record in England. The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York were present. Mdlle. Lenglen was easily superior in the first set, but Mrs. McKane made a great fight in the second and led to 3 —o. Mdlle. Lenglen’s superior skill, however, ultimately triumphed. After the fonm which Patterson and Ander* son and one or two Continental players hart shown, critics take it for granted that the championship is again going overseas.
