TOBACCO DEARER.
MERCHANTS ANNOUNCE A RISE.
PROTEST BY RETAILERS.
The New Zealand merchants have advised retailers throughout the Dominion that the price of tobacco and cigarettes has been advanced—tobacco by 2d per lb, and cigarettes by 9d per 1000. This is in addition to a rise previously notified, which at that time represented a rise of 4d per lb on tobacco and Is 3d per 1060 cigarettes. This last rise is accompanied by the shortening of terms, which practically means cash terms. The New Plymouth retailers state that if prices have to be advanced by retailers the public should realise that such advanced prices have not been brought about by them. The retailers state that they have not been notified, nor are they aware that any advance has been made by the tobacco companies. At a representative meeting held in New Plymouth last night it was decided to call a meeting of retailers throughout the Taranaki district to protest against the rise.
