THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
TRANSPORT OVER THE GAP. BETTER ARRANGEMENTS SOON. When the accident to the Whenuakura bridge last week interrupted the railway service, the Taranaki Chamber, of Commerce took prompt steps to impress upon the Railway Department the necessity of making arrangements to transport passengers over the gap from Patea to Waverley. The assistance of the member for the district (Mr. S. G. Smith) was obtained in impressing upon the Minister the necessity for prompt action, as passengers had to make their own arrangements for the journey. Last night the president of the Chamber received the following telegram from Mr. Smith: “The department contend that the arrangements made are the best under the circumstances. Regarding the charge imposed by taxidrivers, an officer has been sent to Waverley with a view to securing a reduction. The department hope to complete temporary arrangements early to enable the transhipment of passengers and luggage at the Whenuakura bridge, thus dispensing with motors and minimising the inconvenience.”
