THE LATEST REPORT, SOME INTERESI’ING DETAILS. From the progress report of the Repatriation Department, issued by Mr. J. R. Samson (director), regarding the unemployment, it is gathered that the department has placed 25,663 discharged soldiers in employment, and there are at the present time 285 names on the “Employment Wanted” Register (Auckland <6, Wellington 103, Canterbury 50, Otago 47h These figures represent a decrease of 17 as compared with the previous month. It was necessary, during the month, to pay unemployment sustenance in six cases of hardship. 7 TRAINING. Tn addition to 1390 students who have been assisted financially with grants for the payment of fees and the purchase of text-books, the department has arranged vocational training for 5886 partially disabled soldiers, apprentices, etc., and 4974 of this number have completed their courses and have been absorbed in various industries. Thtere are now only s>l2 still being trained. During the past month 44 men commenced training and $sS completed their courses and obtained employment. The total amount expended to date on the provision of facilities for training and for the sustenance of trainees is £364,269. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. Loans to assist discharged soldiers to establish themselves in business or professions have boon granted in 5938 cases at a cost of £1,098,741. A further 13.268 men have received advances totalling for the purchase of household furniture or tools i-j-trade, and 3944 have been granted financial assist 1 ance in other directions, the amount paid to or on behalf of soldiers under all headings being £2,109,542. REPAYMENTS. Of the total amount advanced £l,732,847 is by way of loan, and of this sum the total collected by the depart- j ment in repayment of such loans, up to i September 30. 1921, amounted to £742,-1 864, or 42 per cent, of the total loan i advances. Expenditure on soldiers during September amounted to £26.155,! whilst collections for the month totalled £3S,GOB. Summary of assistance rendered,; showing the nature of the ; number assisted and the amount, is as ■ under: — Loans. —Business, 5938, £1.098.741; 1 furniture, tools, etc., 13,268, £634,106. Grants. —Training, sustenance, etc., i 7276, £364.269; transportation, 2814, ! £7,002; unemployment sustenance, ' 1100, £5424. Placed in employment, 25,663. Total, 56,689 assisted, amount £2,109,542.
