At eleven o’clock this morning a large crowd of the public and the Stratford school children had assembled in front of the municipal chambers to give effect to the wish of His Majesty the King that the ending the Great War should be marked by the complete cessation of all work. The ceremony was very impressive. As the bell tolled at eleven o’clock the gathering stood in silence for the space of two minutes. The Salvation Army Band was in attendance, under the leadership of Mr. W. E. Burley, and accompanied the crowd in the singing of the first verses of “O God. Our Help in Ages Past.” The ceremony concluded with the singing of the ‘’National Anthem.” Many had taken the opportunity to pay homage to the glorious dead by leaving wreaths in the vestibule of the municipal chambers, and a large number of floral tributes gave evidence that those who died still live in the memories of those who knew them. Wreaths were left by the Mayoress, on behalf of the burgesses of Stratford, the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Stratford High School, Sacred Heart School, Convent School, St. Mary’s School, and many private individuals. CRICKET. The Stratford Cricket Club played its first match on Thursday, when it journeyed to Eltham for the opening game in the Thursday competition. With only one practice it could not be expected that the team would come home victorious. but the beating was by no means ignominous. and with practice the Stratford team will be a combination to be seriously considered by opponents by the end of the season. Eltham won yesterday by 31 runs. The following were the details:— ELTHAM.
