STRATFORD AGENCY. Advertisements and items of news for publication in tfce Taranaki Daily Nows should be left at the office of our local representatives, Wilson Bros., Broadway, Stratford. Order* for papers may also be left with them. TENNIS SEASON OPENS. Nov. 10. One of the best days for some time past was experienced by the Stratford Tennis Club to-day for the opening of their season, and the beautiful weather quite made up for the disappointment of having to postpone the fixture for a week. There was a good attendance of members at the courts from early in the afternoon until the evening, and the enthusiasm shown speaks well for the future of the club. All four courts were in good order, and games were kept going merrily throughout the afternoon. During the day ice-creams were served, and proved very acceptable, and a dainty afternoon tea was provided z by the ladies of the club. The courts at present are still a little heavy from the effects of the recent rains, but there is no doubt that they will soon be in tiptop playing order. The membership of the club now numbers about 100, and this season should be one of the most successful ever experienced. A jolly impromptu dance at the Parish Hall this evening terminated a most enjoyable day. The music was provided by Mrs. Bianchi, and the same good fellowship which marked the proceedings at the courts made the evening most enjoyable.

THE “SILENT POLICEMAN”. The “silent policeman” which the Borough Council's workmen have been preparing for some time was to-day placed in position in the centre of the intersection of Broadway and R,egan Street.. The “policeman” is the same as that which is in use at Hawera. When placed in the ground a round donie-shaped top protrudes from the level of the street. It is just high enough to be noticed in the day-time, and there are round port-holes, from which shines a red light, to make it noticeable at night-time. The light is connected from an electric light pole on the comer, the wire running underground, and it is a tribute to the thoroughness of the work of those who tar-sealed Broadway that the workmen who had to cut a channel for thp “policeman” to the pole found it a very tough proposition to break through the surface of the roadway. By reason of the very wide area of the intersection there will doubtless be some difficulty at first in inducing drivers of vehicles to make the wide sweep necessary to keep the “policeman” on the right side when turning the corners, But the authorities of late have been keeping a very stringent watch on breakers of borough by-laws, and after a while drivers will probably be unanimous in recognising the new “golden rule” for traffic in Broadway which the innovation has introduced.

PERSONAL. Mr. E. F. Hollands, A.M.1.E.E., formerly electrical engineer to the Stratford Borough Council, and now connected with a Wellington firm, is at present on a visit to Taranaki. It will soon be time to get your Christmas mail away to the Old Country and readers a?e advised td order their private greeting cards in good time.
