SOUTH TARANAKI MATCHES. SATURDAY'S PLAY. MIDLANDS v. EXCELSIOR. Midlands met Excelsior In the first match or the ehampionship, the latter, after a very interesting game, winning by 12 runs. Pratt get busy and piled up 46 runs, and several otter batsmen got into double figures. Midlands batted first and made 80 runs, Excelsior replying with 92 runs. In the second innings Midlands had lost eight wickets for 11 runs at the call of time. The final scores were: Excelsior 92 (Pratt 46, McPherson 11) ; Midlands 80 (Nielson 14, Beechey and Nichol 13 each).
Bowling analysis.—‘Midlands : McCarthy one for 15, Brown none for 11, Machin four for 11, McFadyen two for 18, Pratt two for 13. Excelsior: Beechey four for 28, Nichol none for 15, Nielsen one for 14, Tiddy three for 14, Fairweather none for 6, Kean none for 4. ELTHAM v. OKAIAWA. Eltham visited Okaiawa and defeated the local teaun by ten wickets. Okaiawa, batting first, made the poor score of 22, Cole registering the fine average of six wickets for 9 runs. Eltham replied with 120 for six wickets, and declared. C. Little played a fine aggressive innings for 86 not out, including five sixers. Marsh and Fearon also got into double figures. Okaiawa did better in their second attempt, chiefly due to Penny carrying 1 is bat through the innings for 69, and saved an innings defeat by one run. Eltham made the winning hit ten minutes before the call o: time, thus getting a three-point victory. MANAIA >v. KAPONGA. The first Cup fixture was played' on the Manaia Domain on Saturday afternoon between Manaia and Kaponga teams. The match resulted in a three-point win for Manaia by six runs. In the first innings Manaia batted first, and were disposed of for 58 runs, the chief scorers being Bairstow 17 and Judd 11. The Kaponga team put up th© respectable score of 9.", a margin of 35 to the good. The
chief scorers were Abbott 47 and Priest 10. Manaia, going in for the second innings, compiled 84 runs for the loss of four wickets and declared their innings closed—Dr. Maunseli 24 not out, C. McKay 20, Haynes 10 and Judd 9 not out. Kaponga required 49 runs to get a three-point win. The team realised 43 within seven minutes of time. Both Bairstow and H. Hughes did excellent bowling. For Kaponga, Mair took seven wickets for five runs in the second .innings. The fielding of the Kaponga team is well worthy of praise. Bowling analysis—Manaia, first innings: Thomas none for 22, Abbott one for 16, Priest o'jc for 14, Mair seven for 5. Second innings : Thomas one for 20, Mair one for 36, Priest one for 9, Abbott oue for 12. Kaponga, first innings: H. Hughes seven ror 29, Bairstow two for 48, C. McKay one for 11. Second innings: Hughes four for 21, Bairstow sir for 17. Members of the Western Park club are elsewhere asked to attend practice at the ground on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in each week. It is hoped there will be a big attendance to-night, when there will also be a working bee in operation.
